Meet
James Meech

A Photographer With a Performing Arts Background

I’ve spent more than 35 years in the performing arts—as a performer, director, producer, technical director, scenic and lighting designer—and I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with talented artists and creative teams from New York to Florida.

I started in musical theatre at nine years old and found my way into technical theatre a few years later. What began in community theatre eventually became professional work and membership in Actors’ Equity Association. Along the way, I also built a career in radio and television, giving me decades of experience both in front of and behind the camera.

All of that influences the way I approach photography.

Years ago, while working on a theatrical production, I pointed out something visually that wasn't working on stage. Someone asked me, “How did you even see that?” My answer was simply, “I guess I just see things differently.”

The phrase stuck because, as it turns out, it's true. I'm not only looking at line, technique, expression or whether the light is technically perfect. I'm watching the entire frame—where your eye goes, how the elements work together, and most importantly, the story being told.

That intersection of performance and storytelling is what led me to found Meech Creative, LLC. For nearly a decade, I’ve specialized in photography for performers, creatives and performing arts organizations—from actor headshots and dancer portraits to theatrical productions, media days and creative portraiture.

Whether I’m photographing an actor who needs a headshot that actually looks like them, a dancer in motion, a theatrical performance happening only once, or a creative portrait that starts with the words, “I have this crazy idea...,” my goal is the same: create images that feel authentic to the person or story in front of my camera.

Just as important is how we get there. Meech Creative is a safe, inclusive and collaborative space where you can be yourself, experiment, ask questions and occasionally get a little weird. Great photographs rarely come from someone simply being told where to stand and when to smile.

They come from trust, collaboration and seeing things a little differently.
